MISSOULA, MT -Republican Greg Gianforte won the state’s Special Election to fill Montana’s sole seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Gianforte defeated Democrat Rob Quist and Libertarian Mark Wicks in Thursday’s election.
His victory came just a day after he was cited for misdemeanor assault after an altercation with Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs. Jacobs says Gianforte body-slammed him. After the incident, Gianforte didn’t appear publicly until his victory speech Thursday night. He told the crowd he wants to take responsibility for his actions by apologizing to Jacobs and the Fox News team (who witnessed the attack) and to his supporters.
Gianforte faces a $500 fine and up to six months in jail for the incident.
