Montana contractors and labor leaders are coming together to serve on a new task force created by Governor Steve Bullock.
The new task force looks into the problems created when employers in the construction industry under-report, underpay or mis-classify workers.
Bullock said when contractors pay workers under the table, fail to pay overtime or classify hourly employees as ‘contract workers’, the state loses employment tax proceeds and workers may be left uncovered for injuries.
The practice also gives some employers an unfair advantage in bidding for jobs.
The task force will be chaired by Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney and will send findings and recommendations to improve compliance to the governor quarterly.
